The rich history of the Persian carpet goes back to at least 400BC when according to Xenophon, they were so highly prized they were often used as diplomatic gifts. Today, they have gained notoriety across the globe for their beautiful, colourful and complex designs and are well known for their quality and durability with the potential for a single rug to last centuries given the right care.
This particular long rug from north west Persia boasts a large tree as the centrepiece running through the middle which is bordered by a repeating herati design of diamonds and other geometric shapes with smaller designs within. It's been well used but also cared for so it does show modest signs of wear as well as slight fading at one end most likely due to prolonged sunlight exposure. It also kicks out slightly at the bottom so doesn't run completely straight.
